Tips from art majors
- Express yourself. Your teacher may have certain expectations, but you’re here to voice yourself as an artists so do that and don’t let anyone hold you back.
- Make an art Instagram page. Art majors get no recognition and there’s not guarantee your work will be in either of the semi-annuals. Take is from someone who submitted work to all 6 and was only in one of them. Make a page and show off your art. Exposure is exposure, even if it’s not in a school show.
- Use your materials. Experiment. Yes we are scarce on supplies, but that shouldn’t impede you! Use that extra bit of paint, get a new palette of paper if yours is done, use a new Micron if your old one is drying and you have to retrace. The department’s shortcomings are no reason for you not to give it all you’ve got.
- Don’t be offended by critique. You may think your artwork is amazing, but there may be someone who can give you a suggestion you’ve never thought of before. Open your mind. You’re here to learn. AND GIVE CRITIQUES TOO! We’re all here to benefit from each other’s individual visions.
- If your teacher asks for paper towels, BRING THEM. Too

Tips from your representative
- Build good relationships with your art teachers (they are people too!).
- Treat your materials well
- If you buy at Blick Art Supplies, show your student ID to get discounts
- Start early with portfolio development (please don’t wait until the last minute)
- If you need help with art techniques, don’t be afraid to ask! (We are here to support everyone)
- Don’t be afraid of your teachers or anyone in the art community (being a freshman doesn’t mean you don’t deserve equal treatment)
- Please keep your classroom clean and treat it like your home! Keeping it clean means that the art department doesn’t have to waste money on cleaning it up and can use that money for supplies!
- Please be kind and share your supplies
